Let’s look at each of the levels of management opportunities individually and the training that goes with them:
Trainee: All management candidates must go through a training series to learn all there is to know about management within a Kmart store. Like any industry, retail management comes with certain requirements, skills, and natural ability in order to be truly successful. Kmart implements training programs for each level of management beginning with basic training for each level, with independent training sessions throughout employment to maintain efficiency. Beginning as a management trainee will provide you with the basic skills and know how to be an effective manager before you step into the role first hand.
Support or Assistant Managers: Management trainees may first undergo the training necessary to attain a support or assistant manager role. These roles primarily provide additional support for the store manager including merchandising, department leadership, employee development and success, etc. There are a great many additional duties and tasks that may be required of support or assistant managers at the discretion of the store manager. These positions are a great place to start because you learn a great deal about the form and functions of a store before deciding to head into a higher realm of management. During this phase there is also a great deal of opportunity for personal and career growth, and relationship building. Many people do not wish to advance beyond support or assistant manager because they have the benefits of a salaried position without the high accountability and responsibility that comes with being a store manager. Not everyone desires to advance, even in a company like Kmart, but the opportunities are there for great associates and managers.
Store Managers: Support or assistant managers will go through a series of training in order to become a store manager. Store managers handle the daily operations of the store including corporate responsibilities, department maintenance, payroll, customer satisfaction, employee support, and much more. Because of the wide scope of the store manager’s position, support or assistant managers must learn the skills necessary to “fill all the hats” that may be required of them. Store managers must portray ultimate integrity and support for the ethics and diversity of the store and company, and must be willing to implement and defend that when necessary.
District Managers: In order to advance to a district manager position, you must complete training and working experience at each of the lower levels of management. Because of the multiple locations that a district manager must be able to manage effectively, it is required that all levels of management are understood, as well as store functions, productivity, and customer feedback for each location. Training to become a district manager begins with rotating training with the Regional Vice President and his/her support staff, and is continued until the sufficient level of knowledge and skills has been adequately demonstrated. Once training is satisfactorily completed, you may begin your role as a district manager at one of Kmart’s many district locations.
Pharmacy: Like other departments in a Kmart store, the pharmacy demands quality leadership and strength in order to excel. Pharmacy managers are expected to motivate themselves and their staff to increase operations, sales, customer satisfaction, and return business. Pharmacy managers are required to be current certificate holders for licensing by the state, and must be able to hold power of attorney in order to maintain and reorder controlled substances. There are pharmacy managers at the store and district level, so opportunities for advancement are available.
Automotive: There are management opportunities available at the automotive departments within Kmart stores. There are store levels such as assistant and auto center manager, as well as a district auto center manager, and service supervisors. These specialized management positions require basic and advanced knowledge in mechanics, parts, sales and service, and customer service.
